Dental Implants FAQ

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are artificial titanium cylinders or screw anchors, which are fitted into the jaw bone, where a tooth is lost, so that an artificial tooth can be replaced. This can be done for more than one tooth also.

How are these implants different from dentures?

The fitting process of dental implant is entirely different from that of dentures, which are further required to be removed and soaked and cleaned in solutions.

How are dental implants fitted?

Fitting the dental implants in the jaws is a surgical procedure, requiring the expertise of a number of dental specialists. It starts with the process of planning the surgery. If required, bone regeneration is done and the number of implants is decided. It also depends on the number of teeth which are to be replaced, ranging from single tooth implant to full dentures. Thereafter, the implant is fitted into the bone and the abutment is created. After a few days, the artificial tooth is placed or the full fixed denture is fitted into these implants.

Are dental implants effective for tooth replacement?

Presently, dental implants have been found to be superior to all other kinds of dentures and crowns, primarily due to their long duration presence. In the world, the success rate has been placed at 85 to 90%, provided the oral hygiene is maintained.

What is the cost of fitting a dental implant?

Dental implants cost is more than dentures, but in the long run, they are highly effective and free from troubles. They also have better finish, closely resembling a natural tooth.

Who is eligible for dental implants?

Anybody with a lost tooth or teeth can go for implants, provided the general health is good and the jaw bones are in good condition. Still, people can get dental implants, but the process can be elongated with long surgeries and duration.

Questions as I asked by the patient.

Where is your  practice registered (which board) and where can I verify this? Are all your dentists registered?

We are registered at DCI( Dental Council of India), with registration number A-593., is the place you can write to them to verify, as perhaps they don’t maintain an online list.

I am concerned about problems developing with implants after I return to the UK. What success rate do you have and how would any problem be rectified?
Please click the link above for your answer. Although rare, it can involve repeat visit/s, which may still work out cheaper than having it in your country. Please work out your costs carefully. We do have a lot of satisfied customers as well those who had to come back.

Do you offer immediate function loading for dental implants and if so what is the success rate?

The failure rate is twice that of normal implants. They are a misnomer and they don’t load immediately, but are meant to be used with liquid or very soft diets for 4-6 months. The purpose is only esthetic and are mostly used as “one-piece/single stage variety”, to avoid screw loosening.

What are your rates of post op infection?

Implants normally don’t get infected. It’s unheard off. They fail and may be a source of mild pain, mostly unnoticed.

Can implants be achieved within a two week period?

Yes, it normally takes a day, but they need to be loaded or crowned post 3-5 months depending on the site. Rarely a doctor may plan it later. Usually lower jaw implants are ready to be loaded in 3 months and upper in 5 months.

My intention would be to visit you on my first day in Delhi. I assume this would be for a consultation?

As I would like to visit other areas of India during my holiday would it be possible to have the treatment just before flying home? How long would the effects last? Yes, but preference is you be here for atleast 2 days before you fly to take care of anything amiss, and save you from flying stress. 5 days is much better as that saves you from going to a dentist in your country for the removal of the stitches.

What can I expect in post operative care?

It is mostly uncomplicated and written instructions about medicines, soft food and cold fomentation etc. is provided. One can recover at one’s home or hotel room. We mostly do non-flap implant placement which is minimally surgical because we are perhaps the only ones in the country to have a 3D X-ray, on site, hence healing is much faster and sutures get mostly avoided.

Would I need to have check up from my dentist in the UK on Return?

There is no need, unless sutures are to be removed.

Would you contact my UK dentist?

In case you want.

What insurance can you offer me?

None. Warranties on implant replacement only are available for 6-10 years on certain implants. It does not extend to the bone loss if any.

Who would carry out my treatment and do they speak English?
